Oct 12, 2022

Whether you installed shutters in your residence or business, maintaining shutters is different than taking care of other kinds of window treatments. You can’t just launder your shutters or drop them off at the nearest dry cleaner, after all. With that in mind, we thought it would be a good idea to provide some window shutter cleaning tips you can use as early as today.

You’ve done it. You made the decision to have shutters installed in your home and they look great. Friends and family members have given you plenty of compliments about how your window treatments have transformed the look of your home on the inside and outside.

Did you have shutters installed at your business instead? Shutters are a great window treatment for a long list of business types, such as restaurants, cafés, salons and boutique shops, to name just a few.

Tips to Clean Shutters

Whether you installed shutters in your residence or business, maintaining shutters is different than taking care of other kinds of window treatments. You can’t just launder your shutters or drop them off at the nearest dry cleaner, after all. With that in mind, we thought it would be a good idea to provide some window shutter cleaning tips you can use as early as today.

Be Proactive

While there isn’t much you can do to prevent dust from accumulating on your shutters all together, there is something you can do to minimize the amount of dust that comes to rest on your shutters. And it’s simple – rub a fabric dryer sheet on both sides of each slat on your shutters.

Dust Regularly

While it may seem counterintuitive, dusting your shutters regularly will minimize the amount of work you need to do to maintain your shutters. Pick a day and make it a point to dust your shutters on that day every week without exception. By dusting your shutters at least weekly, you’ll avoid having to spend hours deep cleaning them down the line.

Use the Right Tools

While it’s typically wise to use a feather or microfiber duster when you dust your shutters every week, you may have to resort to something else if you don’t have a duster on hand. To find an alternative tool to clean your shutters, you needn’t look beyond your sock drawer.

To dust your shutters fast, put a sock on each of your hands. You can clean both sides of a slat at the same time by rubbing your sock-covered thumb along the bottom of the slat and your other fingers along the top.

If your shutters need some extra attention because you’ve neglected them for a while, you may want to use a paintbrush to clean them using plain water, soapy water or, depending on the construction of your shutters, oil soap. Just make sure you have a dry cloth on hand so you can wipe any extra cleaning solution off your paintbrush between slats and avoid transferring dirt from one slat to another one.

What's the first sign of spring? For some, hearing birds calling again or the beginning of spring sports might mark the start of the season. As a Midwest homeowner, think of the first day you can open your windows and breathe in the fresh air. With these first signs of warm weather comes spring cleaning. Homeowners set out to tackle tasks that didn't get done over the winter and prepare for spring and summer holidays. Since open windows signify spring, your window treatments must be clean and ready for the season. Let's look at some spring cleaning tips for your window treatments to set the tone for a great spring. Open Your Windows After using candles and air fresheners all winter, there's nothing like smelling the spring breeze once you open your windows. Opening windows can serve a greater purpose than simply bringing in new smells–it can air out your home. The Consumer Product Safety Commission asserts that growing scientific evidence indicates that air within homes can become more polluted than outdoor air in many cities. When we use water heaters, gas ovens, and fireplaces, we may release pollutants into our home's indoor air cycles, and opening our windows may help clear them out. That said, keeping windows open for extended periods in the spring can bring in allergens or even insects. Homeowners must plan with their families how long and often they'll keep windows open and ensure they have proper window protection. Wash or Dry Clean Drapery Custom drapery adds style and function to your home. If you are opening and closing drapery throughout the spring, you may notice stains or inconsistencies in the fabric. Those with young children and pets should carefully examine the drapes when cleaning. Accidents happen; if stains are in the folds of drapery or on the opposite side, they can be easy to miss. While some drapes can be cleaned and cared for at home, other varieties may require dry cleaning. Unlined cotton and linen can usually be washed in cold water or delicate cycles at home. If your drapes have a lining, embellishments, or beading, dry cleaning is your best bet. When in doubt, consult the information that came with drapery, ask at a dry cleaner, or check out our online guide.

Styling your space is often a meticulously planned operation. But, unfortunately, there’s often one thing that’s left out of your décor decisions; an afterthought that is sometimes left to a flippant stab-in-the-dark choice. Your windows!
